Formerly located Public Square, Spartanburg, South Carolina 1881-1960.
Remarks:
Erected in 1881 to commemorate the Centennial of the Battle of Cowpens in which General
Daniel
Morgan
and other citizens of Spartanburg fought. The granite shaft and bronze were gifts of the other states who had participated in the commemoration. The United States Congress appropriated $23,000 for the figure. The City and County of Spartanburg shared the cost of the base and labor. In Sept. 1960, the work was moved from near Magnolia Street in Public Square to North Church in
Morgan
Square to ease traffic congestion. The monument is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In Feb. 1987, the statue was sent to Karkadoulias Bronze Art in Cincinnati for cleaning, repair and patina application. At the invitation of the National Sculpture Society, the statue was exhibited at the Port of History Museum in Philadelphia for the 54th annual Exhibition and Celebration of the United States Constitution, Sept. 17-Nov. 15, 1987. It was then exhibited at the E. Graves Jones Auditorium in Spartanburg, Nov. 16 1987-Jan. 15, 1988 before being reinstalled. IAS files include related articles the
