    Description:
Granite gateway and exedra on each side of park entrance. Each side of the gateway is composed of two square columns of different heights joined by an arch. Atop each of the inner, tallest columns stands a full-length bronze figure of a soldier. The figure on the proper right of the gateway is a Civil War soldier; the figure on the proper left is a Rough Rider from the Spanish-American War. The Civil War figure is dressed in uniform and stands at parade rest, holding his rifle muzzle with both hands. A canteen hangs at his hip. The Rough Rider is dressed in uniform and holds the muzzle of his gun with his proper left hand; the butt of the gun rests on the ground. A knapsack hangs at his hip. The lower of the two columns on each side of the gateway attaches to a curved granite exedra. On the inside back wall of each exedra is a bronze relief bust in a medallion. The bust on the west exedra wall is of John A. Logan. The relief depicts Logan with a full moustache and in dress uniform. The bust on the east exedra wall is of Col. William A. Phillips. The relief depicts Phillips with a full beard and moustache, wearing a dress uniform.

    Remarks:
Funds for the memorial gateway were raised with a levy of 1/4 mill on the dollar by the Saline County Commission in 1917. Stuart & Son received $13,000 for the contract to erect the monument. George E. Stuart, with the assistance of Hugh A. Price from Chicago, designed the memorial. The full-length bronze figures were stock pieces. The bronze medallion relief busts commemorating Logan and Phillips were custom designed. In 1933 the gateway was widened and the original bronze gates were removed. Civil War soldier and columns were repaired a few years prior to SOS! survey.
