Description:
General Thomas "
Stonewall
"
Jackson
astride a horse in the midst of battle.
Jackson
wears a
full
beard, no hat, and a uniform with a high-collared jacket and gloves. The horse is spirited and lively, depicted in mid-stride with proper left front leg and proper right back leg both bent and hoof raised. The horse's head and neck are extended forward and to the proper left, with the nostrils flared and the mouth open.
The reins, strap, saddle attachments, harness, buckles and clips appear to have been cast separately and added last.
Jackson
's proper left shoulder is thrust forward and the upper torso is turned towards the proper left. His proper left arm is bent sharply and holds the reins of the horse tightly behind the horse's neck.
Jackson
's proper right arm is extended back with the right hand lightly holding the rear edge of the saddle and bed roll.
Jackson
body is pitched forward, and he appears about to lift out of the saddle. The stirrups are covered with "spats" which cover half of his feet. On the plinth are a broken wagon wheel, cannon balls and laurel in a large oval.
The base is built of pieces of polished granite with inscriptions incised into the surface.

Jackson
. After a/brilliant Mexican War record, he joined the Confederacy in 1861, earned his nickname and/advancement in rank in first/Battle of Bull Run, and was killed at Chancellorsville. During the 1960's
Jackson
's sword was stolen twice and the horse was spray painted. It was then cleaned and treated around 1985-1986. At that time the original patina appears to have been removed and the piece was painted gold.
