    Provenance:
Formerly located Piatt Park, East End of Park at Vine Street Entrance, Cincinnati, Ohio until 1988.
    Garfield Place Cincinnati, Ohio
    Remarks:
Funded by public taxes. Cost $30,000. Legner & Quaing designed and executed base. According to Robert C. Vitz in his book "The Queen and the Arts: Cultural Life in Nineteenth Century Cincinnati," Clement John Barnhorn studied under Louis T. Rebisso and assisted him in sculpting the William Henry Harrison monument. Piatt Park was formerly known as Garfield Place. When Piatt Park was renovated in 1988, the sculpture was moved to its present location. Bentley Meisner Associates were the landscape architects responsible for the design for the 1988 park renovation.
IAS files contain copies of newspaper photographs and captions from Cincinnati Post, Sept. 3, 1936, which shows workers cleaning the base of the monument; Cincinnati Enquirer, Oct. 7, 1962, which shows the monument in its original location at the Vine Street end of Piatt Park; Cincinnati Enquirer, Aug. 11, 1988, which shows the sculpture about to be removed for cleaning and relocation; and Cincinnati Post, Nov. 8, 1988, which shows the sculpture being moved to its new location.
IAS files also contain copies of articles from Cincinnati Enquirer, April 26, 1980, which discusses the creation, funding, and dedication of the sculpture, and controversy over its location; Cincinnati Enquirer, Nov. 8, 1988, which discusses conservation treatment and relocation of the sculpture; and Cincinnati Post, Nov. 27, 1965, which discounts the theory of horse hoof symbolism in this particular sculpture and others.
