(Inscriptions on all sides of the base and pedestal include names of Post members, names of Civil War battles in which the Post participated and names of dead comrades) Founder's mark appears.
Description:
Full-length figure of a uniformed Union soldier stands at parade rest atop an ornate shaft and base. The figure has a moustache and wears a long caped coat and cap. He holds his rifle in front of him with both hands around the barrel and the butt near his proper right foot and has a knife in his holster on the proper left side. There are

. Decorative elements on the base include reliefs of an eagle, cannons, cannonballs, a soldier on horseback and an anchor.

Remarks:
The monument was erected in 1887 by the Lilly Post 66, G.A.R., on a tract of land donated in 1883 as a burial plot for veterans. The memorial cost $2,800. Peter A. Baird's design for the monument was approved on March 24, 1887 and the monument dedicated June 23, 1887. IAS files contain a full transcription of the names and inscriptions on the monument and related excerpts from the Syracuse Herald American, Jan. 19, 1947, and The Post Standard (Syracuse, NY), July 10, 1986. IAS files also contain excerpt from "The Outdoor Public Commemorative Monuments of Syracuse, New York: 1885-1950," by Calvin M. Hennig, Diss. Syracuse University, February 1983, pg. 52-66.
