Located West Street Park, 83 West Street, Danbury, Connecticut
Provenance:
Formerly located In a small park at West Wooster & Division Streets, Danbury, Connecticut 1884-1931.
Remarks:
The sculpture was commissioned and donated to the City of Danbury by Edward A. Housman, a local philanthropist, who installed the sculpture near his home on Deer Hill Avenue in a small park at the intersection of West Wooster and Division Streets. The sculpture was moved to its current site in 1931 when residents of the neighborhood petitioned for a new sidewalk. IAS files contain a newspaper article from The Danbury News-Times, Dec. 12, 1993, pg. 3 which includes a photograph taken in 1896 of the sculpture in its original site near Housman's home. Both the Housman home and the park are no longer extant. For additional information see also the Danbury Evening News, Aug. 19, 1884, pg. 4; Sept. 15, 1884, pg. 4; and Aug. 20, 1929, pg. 8; and The Danbury News-Times, Aug. 28, 1954, pg. 4 and May 30, 1993, pg. E3. The sculpture was restored in 1993 after it was knocked off of its base by a car.
