Full-length portrait of Admiral David G. Farragut. He wears a uniform with belted overcoat. A sword hangs from his proper left hip. He holds binoculars in his proper left hand. The bronze sculpture stands on a Hudson River bluestone base. The base forms an exedra which terminates at either end in carved dolphins springing up through waves. On the central pier of the exedra is an unsheathed sword in bas-relief. On either side of that, also in bas-relief, are two crouched female figures. The figure on the right, dressed with a breastplate, exemplifies Courage. The figure on the left exemplifies Loyalty. On the back of the base, along the top, are symbols of fire and the seaman's rope knot.

Nearby plaque: "The Farragut Monument. The monument commemorating the civil war naval hero Admiral David Glasgow Farragut was Saint-Gaudens' first public commission. It was begun in 1879 and unveiled in Madison Square Park, New York City in 1881, where it still stands. Here in front of you is the original Hudson River bluestone base adapted from the design drawn by the sculptor's friend, the architect Stanford White. With this commission Saint-Gaudens' reputation was assured and American sculpture revitalized."

The sculpture is a copy of the original which stands in New York's Madison Square. The replica of the sculpture was cast by Modern Art Foundry in June 1994. The exedra base is the original base, installed in New York in 1881 and removed in 1934 due to deterioration from weather and pollution. The base was donated to the Saint-Gaudens Memorial in Cornish where it has been on exhibit since 1948.
