    Description: 
    Christopher Columbus, dressed in period clothing of the 15th century stands atop a globe with continents outlined. Columbus holds a flagpole in his proper left hand and grasps the hilt of a sword in his proper right hand. A carved anchor with heavy gauge rope decorates the back of the figure. The entire sculpture is placed on a circular base in the center of a concrete fountain basin surrounded by shrubbery. Three benches are symmetrically placed around the basin, a fourth bench is now missing. A five-sided conical marker, with commemorative text and five-sided base, stands at the east end of the park.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture and the marker were both sponsored by Unico National, a service organization whose members are Italian Americans. The sculpture was placed at its present site when West Park was renamed Columbus Park. The marker was added in 1992, as part of the 1992 park revitalization and in honor of the 500th anniversary of the Columbus voyage. Each side of the marker represents one hundred of the five hundred years since Columbus landed in America. IAS files contain a partial transcription of names on base of marker. IAS files contain related articles from the Stamford Advocate, March 11, 1960, pg. 1, 2; and Oct. 12, 1992, pg. 1.
