Description:
A slightly larger than life-size figure of
Christopher
Columbus
standing with his proper left leg forward in front of a low wall. The proper right arm extends straight down and grasps a scrolled document; the proper left arm is bent at the elbow, and the proper left hand rests on a sphere resting on a low marble wall. The figure is dressed in a knee-length belted gown of the period with elaborately detailed fringes at top and bottom; a chain and medallion with an image in silhouette hangs down across the breast. The figure is wearing an overcoat fringed in fur with sleeves puffed at the elbows.

Remarks:
IAS files contain a copy of The Day (New London, CT), Oct. 12, 1928, pg. 1, discussing the dedication ceremonies. The statue was a gift to the City of New London by Italian-American residents, organized for this purpose as the
Columbus
Statue Fund. It stands at Tyler Square, in what for decades was the geographic heart of the Italian-American community. The dedication ceremony was scheduled to corresponded with the 436th anniversary of
Columbus
' discovery of America.
