Christopher
Columbus
, standing, wearing a hat and long robes and holding a scroll in his proper left hand. The sculpture is installed atop a tall shaft that is adorned around the top with bronze heads of Native Americans, set in fountain basin. At the foot of the shaft are four relief plaques that illustrate:
Columbus
before the King and Queen of Spain; the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria;
Columbus
landing; and
Columbus
with the Native Americans. Below the reliefs are two small gargoyles and two small fish heads that spout water in shell basins that are each supported by two bronze turtles. Water flows over the shell basins into a large circular fountain basin.

The sculpture was erected by Onondaga County citizens of Italian origin.
Columbus
Circle was formerly known as St. Mary's Circle. In 1992, the sculpture was restored by Healy Brothers Foundry in Rhode Island. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the sculpture was rededicated Oct. 12, 1992.
