Remarks:
John
A.
Andrew
(1818-1867) was a lawyer and a strong abolitionist who served as governor of Massachusetts from 1960-1865. When he died, he was burried in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, but two years later his body was moved to Hingham Cemetery according to his wish to be burried in his adopted home town. On December 13, 1871, at the annual reunion of officers of the 32nd Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteers, a committee was forned to provide a monument for Governor
Andrew
's unmarked grave. Thomas Gould sculpted the likeness of Governor
Andrew
from his earlier marble bust sculpted in 1863.
At the dedication ceremony, the monument association turned the sculpture over to the Hingham Cemetery Corporation with a $300 gift to help with the sculpture's upkeep. The monument association also prepared the documents that are burried in the base of the sculpture. IAS files contain an excerpt from the dedication program that lists the document consealed in the base. For additional information see the Hingham Journal, July 3, 1985 and the Boston Globe, Sept. 10/11, 1875.
