    Description: 
    Dante stands in a floor-length scholar's gown and medieval scholar's hat. The hat has a laurel wreath around its band. He holds a book, identified as the "Commedia" on the cover, diagonally across his chest. His proper left knee is visible against the folds of his clothes. The sculpture is mounted on a rectangular base with beveled edges.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture was brought back from Italy in 1922 by Scranton sculptor Agostino N. Rosso. A committee of Italian societies funded the base. The sculpture was originally installed in Platt Place near the Lackawanna railroad station. During construction of the Spruce Street Bridge it was relocated to its current site in front of the University of Scranton library.
