The portrait sculpture honors Patrick Walsh, who was born in Ireland in 1840 and served as Augusta's mayor, a Georgia legislator and a United States Senator. As a young man he fought in the Civil War for the Confederacy, earning the rank of lieutenant. Walsh worked as a journalist for the Associated Press before coming to Augusta as a journalist for the Sentinel and Chronicle, where he later became business manager and ultimately owner and
publisher
. Walsh died in 1899. The sculpture was installed under the direction of the Walsh Memorial Association for the people of Augusta and Georgia. For related reading see Marguerite F.
