    Remarks:
The portrait sculpture honors Patrick Walsh, who was born in Ireland in 1840 and served as Augusta's mayor, a Georgia legislator and a United States Senator. As a young man he fought in the Civil War for the Confederacy, earning the rank of lieutenant. Walsh worked as a journalist for the Associated Press before coming to Augusta as a journalist for the Sentinel and Chronicle, where he later became business manager and ultimately owner and publisher. Walsh died in 1899. The sculpture was installed under the direction of the Walsh Memorial Association for the people of Augusta and Georgia. For related reading see Marguerite F. Fogleman's "Historical Markers and Monuments of Richmond County," Augusta, GA: Richmond County Historical Society, 1986.
