    Remarks:
Gift of the Italian American Colony, or Sons of Italy, who raised funds for the piece through public subscription. The erection of the sculpture was part of a larger series of programs designed to celebrate the sixth centenary of the death of Italian poet Dante Alighieri. The sculpture was originally located in Downing Park, Newburgh. In the summer of 1986, the bust was loaned to the Torrington Historical Society in Connecticut for an exhibit on the work of sculptor Paolo S. Abbate. That same year, the bust and its base were restored by Unico, an Italian-American association. Graffiti was sandblasted from the base by Jack and Cossie Saffioti. Connecticut artisan David Leaves stripped gray paint from the bust and applied a new patina. The work was relocated and rededicated at the Newburgh Free Library. IAS files contain a copy of a postcard which shows the work in its original location, Downing Park, dedication programs from 1921 and 1986 and related articles from L'Interpetre (Poughkeepsie, New York), vol. 1 no. 1, Feb. 1927; the Newburgh News, Oct. 12, 1946; the Middletown Herald Record, Oct. 7, 1986, and the Newburgh Evening News, Oct. 12, 1986 and Dec. 24, 1989.
