He is the founder of the Turnverein in Germany, later known as the Turner Society, which promoted physical fitness, education and democratic ideals. The first Turner Society in the United States was founded in Cincinnati in 1848. The memorial was dedicated by the Cincinnati Turnverein on October 22, 1911 on the centennial of the opening of the first Turnverein in Berlin. The sculpture has been moved from another location in Inwood Park. IAS files contain related excerpts from G. Giglierano and D.
