Remarks:
The mural was commissioned by the Northern California Arts Project under the Works Progress Administration. Originally, the commission was given to artist Beniamino Bufano, but he was too busy to take on the project, so it was reassigned to Sargent Johnson. Johnson designed and modeled the mural, and supervised forty-five workers in its execution. IAS files contain related newspaper clipping and catalog excerpt from San Francisco Art Commission Honor Award, 9/21/77, exhibition at de Young Museum. For further information see the San Francisco Examiner, Sept. 20. 1977.
