The sculpture was commissioned by J. W. "Jake" Brown, longtime friend and advisor of Oscar Robertson, who financed its $100,000 cost. Oscar Robertson became the University of Cincinnati's first black basketball player when he enrolled at the school in 1956. In his four years at the school, beginning in 1957, he was a three-time All-American and led the nation in scoring for three years. When he graduated, Robertson was the leading scorer in NCAA history. IAS files contain two related articles from the Cincinnati Enquirer, October 15, 1994, Sect. D, and October 22, 1994.
