    Remarks:
One of four portrait statues located on south facade of State Capitol honoring individuals important in Connecticut's history. The sculpture was commissioned under the supervision of the State Commission on Sculpture and installed around 1934. Gideon Wells (1802-1878) was editor of The Hartford Times and Secretary of the Navy (1860-1869) under presidents Lincoln and Johnson.
The sculpture was cleaned and restored as part of a complete restoration of the State Capitol, completed in 1985. For further reading see: Marion Hepburn Grant's "In and About Hartford-Tours and Tales," (Hartford: Connecticut Historical Society, 1978), pg. 193.
