Description:
Installed high above the main entrance is a standing portrait of Simon de Montfort dressed as a knight holding a shield with his proper left hand. He wears a long belted tunic, a long cloak, chain mail, and a three-pointed crown. A sheathed knife is tucked into his belt.

Remarks:
One of six courthouse sculptures of men known for their development of law on English soil. The sculptures are installed on the cornice above the main entrance to the courthouse. Simon de Montfort (1200-1265) established the British House of Commons in 1264. Lehman & Schmidt were the architects of the courthouse.

Marzulli's "The Development of Ohio's Counties and Their Historic Courthouses," Columbus, OH: County Commissioners Association of Ohio, n.d., pg. 41.; and a pamphlet entitled "The Courthouse: a Photographic Document" from the Cuyahoga County Archives. IAS files also contain unpublished material on the courthouse art work from the Cuyahoga County Commissioners Reference Library.
