The sculpture had originally been installed at the foot of Market Street in a small square facing the Ferry Building. It was moved to its current site in 1958 when the Sailors Union Building was completed. IAS files contain article from West Coast Sailor, Feb. 6, 1942; the article discusses a tribute to the statue.
