Founders (Bronze plaque, base front:) The Fighting Gladiator/Given to the City of Providence in 1891/By George Wilkinson, Superintendant of/the Gorham Manufacturing Company, this/statue is a copy of an original at the/LOUVRE in Paris./The Fighting Gladiator was restored in/1988 by the Providence Parks Department. unsigned Founder's mark appears. Description:  Figure of a nude male standing with his proper right leg forward and his proper left leg back. He holds his proper left arm out with a guard on it, as though he is blocking something. His proper right arm is back and holds a 6 inch cylindrical weapon or fighting tool. This is a copy of a marble original located at the Louvre in Paris, France. Marshall's text indicates work was gift in 1891, which conflicts with base plaque which says work was presented in 1894.
