    Description: 
    A three-quarter length portrait of General Joseph Roswell Hawley, seen with head turned to proper left. He is dressed in military uniform, with cloak draped over proper right arm and proper right hand grasping the uniform belt. His proper left hand holds the handle of a sword at this side. The bronze medallion is set within a marble surround, with flat outer inscribed band. The entire piece on the east side of the recessed north portico of the State Capitol.

    Hawley was Governor of Connecticut from 1866 to 1867, then U.S. Senator.
    The medallion was commissioned under the supervision of the State Commission on Sculpture and dedicated Oct. 18, 1912. IAS files contain excerpt from "Hartford's Outdoor Sculpture," exhibition catalogue (April 1981), Trinity College, Hartford, pg. 43.
