HE WAS ENGAGED IN THE EVACUATION OF A DETACHMENT OF/MARINES TRAPPED BY ENEMY JAPANESE FORCES BY DARINGLY LEADING NUMEROUS/LANDING CRAFT TOWARD THE SHORE AND VALIANTLY PLACED HIS CRAFT AS A/SHIELD BETWEEN THE BEACHHEAD AND THE JAPANESE. BY HIS OUTSTANDING/LEADERSHIP, HE SAVED THE LIVES OF HUNDREDS OF MARINES WHO OTHERWISE/WOULD HAVE PERISHED. FATALLY WOUNDED, HIS LAST WORDS WERE "DID THEY GET OFF?"/FOR HIS DEVOTION TO DUTY AND HEROISM, HE WAS POSTHUMOUSLY AWARDED THE/MEDAL OF HONOR. signed

Signalman 1st Class Douglas Albert Munro, who lost his life on September 27, 1942 while trying to save a contingent of Marines stranded on Guadalcanal. The sculpture was funded with an initial appropriation from the State VFW. IAS files contain a related article from The Press (Atlantic City, NJ), Sept. 25, 1989, pg. C2; and a dedication program, with itinerary.
