Description:  The stone was incised with an inscription by the Mechanics of Raleigh, but the surface of the stone has deteriorated so that the inscription is unreadable. Subject:  Occupation -- Industry -- Machinist Object Type:  Sculpture Owner:  Administered by United States Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Washington, District of Columbia Located National Mall, Adjacent to 14th Street, between Constitution Avenue, N.W. & Independence Avenue, S.W., Washington, District of Columbia Remarks:  One of 193 commemorative stones set into the interior walls of the Washington Monument. The stones were donated by states, cities, towns, organizations, individuals, and foreign countries in honor of George Washington. The Mechanics of Raleigh, North Carolina donated the stone, which is located at the 90 ft. level. By 1880, the stone was badly deteriorated.
