Remarks:
Chapin A. Harris (1806-1860) came to Baltimore in 1835 and in 1839 he set up the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, the first college of its kind in the world. He was a physician and surgeon as well as a dentist, and wrote a number of books on dentistry. In 1911, a committee was appointed by the Maryland State Dental Association to raise funds for the memorial through international subscription. Funds were contributed by colleges, dental associations, and private donations.
