Description:
The work consists of six elongated figures installed in a raised brick base filled with earth and coarse gravel. The figures, representing a cross-section of University students, include a woman carrying a stack of books, an African-American woman with a book on her head, a man with a backpack, a woman carrying a violin case, and a male and female couple walking arm-in-arm. A seventh figure of an African-American male spinning a basketball on his finger (done after University alumnus Michael Jordan) was originally part of the group, but was removed after vandalism.

Remarks:
Gift of the class of 1985. The cost was $65,000. The sculpture was intended to represent the diversity of the
student
body at the University. It was originally installed in front of the Davis Library on campus. Some students raised concerns that certain figures perpetuated racist and sexist stereotypes, particularly an African-American male figure with a basketball, and the African-American female figure carrying a book on her head. The sculpture of the male basketball player was damaged by vandals the weekend of Jan. 11, 1991. Shortly afterwards, the sculpture was moved to its current enclosed garden space. IAS files include related articles from the Daily Tar Heel, Oct. 24, 1990, Jan. 14, 1991 and Jan. 15, 1991.
