Brockway Memorial Library, 10021 N.E. 2nd Avenue, Miami Shores, Florida
Remarks:
The statue commemorates Masaniello Tommaso Aniello (ca. 1622-1647), a Neapolitan fisherman who led a revolt against the Spanish monarchy in Naples. The statue was brought over from Italy by an anonymous donor and may be a copy after a statue in Piazza Masaniello (Naples). Conflicting execution dates are given for the statue. SOS! survey gives casting date as 1864. Inscription on piece lists 1847 date. Miami Herald newsclipping (Oct. 6, 1985) gives cast date of 1862. Before its placement at the library, the statue was located in a residential area. The figure is reported to be the first public monument in Shores. IAS files contain related newsclippings from the Miami Herald (Oct. 6, 1985).
