Remarks:
IAS files contain related article from Ke Alaka'i, Brigham Young University's newspaper, dated Jan. 8, 1991. Fisher designed, sculpted and cast the original "Spirit of Kahuku" as part of a seven figure sculpture honoring the culture which made possible the sugar industry which fueled Hawaii's prosperity beginning in the 1870s. That sculpture, commissioned by Kauai area sugar planters was dedicated in 1989 at Koloa, on Kauai. The Honolulu "Spirit of Kahuku" was cast from the original mold, with a traditional Hawaiian warriors
club
replacing the digging stick. Don Smiler, a former BYU-Hawaiian student, modelled for the sculpture; and the base was built by Bruce Brown. The sculpture was presented to Kahuku High School by Wendell Silva, the executive director of the State Foundation for Culture and the Arts.
