The figures dance on an I-beam painted the color of burnt sienna. Each figure has one foot on the beam and one foot raised behind him, one hand down and one hand raised in front, and head turned to the rear. According to the artist, the traditional Native American is looking back to make sure the modern Native American is following in his footsteps. The purple paint and white speckles used on the Native Americans and the turtle represents wampum. The red paint used on the I-beam represents the traditional color of iron.
