Description:
Three components comprise this installation: Mother Joseph, building a brick wall; a workman pushing a brick-filled wheelbarrow; and an L-shaped bench next to a wall. Both sides of the wall have bronze plaques attached. Mother Joseph wears the habit of the Order of Sisters of Providence, the sleeves of which are rolled up to the elbows, and a cross is around her neck. Her proper right hand holds a bronze bricklayer's
trowel
with which she is applying mortar to the wall. Her proper left hand holds a bronze brick. The workman with collar-length hair and mustache, wears a shirt with a turtleneck under it, belted pants, and boots. He is pushing a wheelbarrow containing bricks and a cinder block towards Mother Joseph.

Remarks:
Presented in recognition of the Centennial of Spokane's Sacred Heart Medical Center, the installation commemorates the Sisters of Providence, who founded Sacred Heart. The nun depicted, Mother Joseph, was the state's most famous nun and a leader in the Sisters of Providence. She came to Spokane in May 1886, and began building a hospital at approximately the site of this sculpture. The hospital opened its doors Jan. 15, 1887. Harold Balazs designed the bronze plaques for the installation. IAS files contain detailed dimensions and transcriptions of full text on installation, including the history of the hospital. IAS files also contain related articles from Heart Beat 24 (Oct. 1986): pg. 3-7; The Spokesman Review (Spokane, WA), July 6, 1986, pg. B1 and May 29, 1994, pg. F2.
