    (On brass plaque, north side of base:) (Names of Steuben County men who served in the 44th Indiana Infantry, 12th Indiana Calvary and 9th Indiana Infantry) "It is for us that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain. That this nation under god shall have a new birth of freedom. and that government of the people by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth. Abraham Lincoln (On brass plaque, south side of base:) (Names of Steuben County men who served in the 129th Indiana Infantry, 155th Indiana Infantry, 19th Indiana Infantry and other regiments) To those who never returned "On fames eternal camping ground their silent tents are spread and glory guards with solemn round the bivouac of the dead."
    (On brass plaque, east side of base:) (Names of Steuben County men who served in the 29th Indiana Infantry, 152nd Indiana Infantry, 42nd Illinois Infantry and 13th Indiana Infantry) In loving memory of the women of 1861 to 1865 whose courage and heroism at home were a no less worth sacrifice upon the altar of liberty. (On brass plaque, west side of base:) Erected 1917 by the grateful citizens of Steuben County To commemorate the valor and patriotism of her Soldiers in the Civil War 1861-1865 unsigned
    Description: 
    At the top of a tall obelisk stands a bronze female figure representing Columbia. She holds a flag in her proper right hand and extends a wreath of peace held in her proper left hand. At the base of the obelisk are four bronze male figures representing each branch of the military. An infantryman stands on the southwest corner, a cavalry officer at the northwest corner, an artillery man at the southeast corner, and a sailor at the northeast corner. The monument is installed in the center of a traffic circle.

    Remarks: 
    The monument honors 1,278 Steuben County men who served during the Civil War, and 280 men who died. The granite for the base was purchased through Hughes Granite Company of Clyde, Ohio. The monument was restored in 1993 by Venus Bronze Works, Inc. (Detroit, MI) and was rededicated as part of Independence Day festivities on July 4, 1993. A nearby a brass plaque contains the names of Steuben County men who served in the 100th Indiana Infantry, 74th Indiana Infantry, 70th Indiana Cavalry, 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery, McClellans Dragoons and the 4th Michigan Infantry. IAS files contain detailed dimensions for each of the four base figures. IAS files contain newspaper articles from the Steuben Herald-Republican, Jan. 20, 1993, pg. 1A, 3A, and Feb. 24, 1993; and the Evening Star (Auburn, IN), Feb. 2, 1993, pg. A1, A6; and a 1992 monument restoration fund brochure entitled "Help Save Our Monument."
