Remarks:
The monument honors 1,278 Steuben County men who served during the Civil War, and 280 men who died. The granite for the base was purchased through Hughes Granite Company of Clyde, Ohio. The monument was restored in 1993 by Venus Bronze Works, Inc. (Detroit, MI) and was rededicated as part of Independence Day festivities on July 4, 1993. A nearby a brass plaque contains the names of Steuben County men who served in the 100th Indiana Infantry, 74th Indiana Infantry, 70th Indiana Cavalry, 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery, McClellans Dragoons and the 4th Michigan Infantry. IAS files contain detailed dimensions for each of the four base figures. IAS files contain newspaper articles from the Steuben Herald-Republican, Jan. 20, 1993, pg. 1A, 3A, and Feb. 24, 1993; and the Evening Star (Auburn, IN), Feb. 2, 1993, pg.
