Incised full-length figures of Roger Williams and Chief Canonicus shaking hands. They are dressed in colonial and tribal garb respectively. Williams holds a book and Canonicus holds a peace

Remarks:
Gift of the State of Rhode Island, Department of Agriculture & Conservation, Office of Forests & Parks to the Town of Jamestown to commemorate an alliance between Roger Williams, Rhode Island's founder and Chief Canonicus of the Narragansett tribe, against efforts by the Pequod tribe to drive out the English colonists. IAS files include Town Clerk correspondence pertaining to the presentation of the marker, and the text of the inscription found at the rear of the monument, taken from "The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations at the End of the Century," v. 1 pg. 36.
