    Remarks: 
    Charles Gasche was the son of Charles C. Gasche, a prominent physician in Wooster, Ohio, and his wife, Barbara Minich Gasche.
    Charles Gasche (1846-1886), the artist’s self portrait was given to the donor’s father, William K. McCalmon, by Gasche. He studied with B. F. Reinhart in New York. Gasche’s work included: frescos, portraits of people but was better known for portraits of animals, landscapes, and interior decoration of buildings, churches, and Masonic halls in many Ohio towns. Works include the elaborate oil fresco painting in the Wa. Co. Courthouse, the Moreland Church fresco, and ornamentation of Quinby Opera House. From 1873-1875 he was employed by the Philadelphia publishing firm of J.C. Caldwell to provide farmscapes and sketches of local landmarks of the county atlases of Wayne, published in 1873, Ashland, 1874, and Holmes, 1875. He taught art and was a popular teacher. He was also a Civil War Veteran, serving with Co. B 186 OVI 2/13/1865 to 9/18/1865.
