Remarks:
Thomas Lowry (1843-1909) was the founder of the Twin Cities transit system. The memorial was commissioned by the Thomas Lowry Memorial Association. The allegorical figures were carved by Charles Wells. Formerly located at the intersection of Lyndale and Hennepin Avenues, the memorial was relocated in 1967 due to highway construction. IAS files contain detailed dimensions. IAS files contain newspaper articles from Minneapolis Star, Feb. 18, 1966, Feb. 28, 1966, April 8, 1967, and May 9, 1967, which discuss relocation of the memorial for highway construction; and from Hill & Lake Press (Minneapolis, MN), June 26, 1993, pg. 7, and Wedge (Minneapolis, MN), July 1993, both of which discuss possibility of moving the memorial again. IAS files also contain excerpts from books by James M. Dennis, "Karl Bitter: Architectural Sculptor 1867-1915," Madison, WI: University of Wisconsin Press, 1967, pg. 204-220, which details the creation of this memorial; and Moira F. Harris, "Monumental Minnesota: A Guide to Outdoor Sculpture," [St.Paul:] Pogo Press, 1992, pg. 15-16.
