Description:
Fired clay totem pole built from nine equal circular segments stacked upon each other and topped with a pointed cap with a handle. Each segment depicts reliefs of a variety of physical levels. The bottom level is an underground scene, the next level depicts plants, the next trees. The progression continues to water, starting with an underwater scene and progressing to the ocean surface. The totem then depicts elements of the sky and space showing birds, a figure blowing wind, and stars and the sun.

Remarks:
Totem was a final project for an introduction to sculpture course taught by James Austin at Salem College in the Spring of 1993, and was created by Austin and the class. The cap on the totem was formed by Austin.
