Description:
Two monumental relief panels on building facade. Each allegorical panel consists of male and female figures in classical Greek garments, holding items that symbolize the functions of the building, including: Law, Peace, Justice and Learning. At the feet of the larger figures is a smaller group of figures that reflect Washtenaw's County
history
from pioneer to contemporary days. Included is a beer bottle, reflecting the
history
of the brewing industry in Ann Arbor.

Remarks:
The sculpture was created for the new County Courthouse building, designed in the International Style under the direction of architect R. S. Gerganoff. IAS files contain a related excerpt from Einar Kvaran's "Annotated Inventory of Outdoor Sculpture in Washtenaw County," 1989, and articles from Ann Arbor News, Sept. 30, 1956; Oct. 1, 1956; and Ypsilanti Press, Oct. 1, 1956.
