    Description: 
    Full-length figure of a Union soldier. He wears a uniform, coat and cap. A bayonet hangs on the proper left side of his belted coat, a small pouch hangs in front and a larger pouch on his back. He holds the barrel of a rifle with both hands; the butt of the gun rests on the ground in front of him. The bronze sculpture stands atop a black and gray granite base. The base consists of a tall die with moulded cornice and ends on two steps.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture and memorial were funded by town appropriation ($2,000) and through subscription efforts of the local Women's Relief Corps. Cost of the sculpture was $3,764.00. IAS files contain copies of related articles from Coos County Democrat (Lancaster, NH), Oct. 2, 1907 and July 22, 1908. IAS files contain copies of related excerpts from "Annual Report of the Town of Lancaster for the Year ending February 15th 1909", pg. 49-50; and from David Ruell's unpublished manuscript "The Public Sculpture of New Hampshire", Concord: New Hampshire Historical Society, 1980, pg. 63-64.
