Description:
Reliefs on the facade and doors of the
Mississippi
War Memorial Building consist of three portrait busts of famous Mississippians, six battle scenes and ancient and modern weaponry. The portraits are of Samuel Dale, Jefferson Davis, and John Anthony Quitman. The figures are busts, enclosed in double-ringed hexagons which include their names and dates. The six reliefs depict battle scenes from military engagements from 1736 to 1918. The scenes are in pairs above each set of doors. A central, classically robed figure separates each scene. The doors contain images of weapons from Greek shield and sword of 400 B.C. to American bombers and battleships of 1940.
