Inscription:  Lin Emery (On foundation:) The Flame; July 30, 1982; Lin Emery; From the people of Lawrence signed Description:  Abstract kinetic sculpture representing flames to symbolize the rebirth, optimism, and vibrance of Lawrence following the Quantrill Raid of 1863 which burned the city. Sculpture has four moveable parts which are wind driven. The city contributed $17,500 and the arts commission raised another $17,500 for the $35,000 total cost which included installation and site preparation. The artist was inspired in part by an inscription on the city hall building taken from a poem by Langston Hughes, who spent part of his childhood in Lawrence: We have tomorrow bright before us like a flame.
