Description:
A standing, larger than life-sized figure of William Penn. At his side, in his proper left hand he holds a white oak twig with leaves. He holds a bowl with a small pitcher (porringer), a key and turf in his proper right hand. He is dressed in the style of a gentleman of the period, with hat, ruffled shirt, waistcoat, doublet, breeches and buckled shoes. He stands on a circular plinth set on a square base.

Remarks:
The statue commemorates the receipt by William Penn, 1644-1718, of the gifts symbolizing his proprietorship of Pennsylvania (including the three lower counties constituting
Delaware
) which were presented to him by local dignitaries upon his arrival in New Castle in October of 1682 to assume to direct leadership of the colony.
