    Description: 
    The south side of the Capitol feature three panels depicting: the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the granting of the Magna Charta by King John of England, and the writing of the U.S. Constitution. Above these carved panels ten full-length "Great Law Givers of the Western World," stand atop piers. The ten heroic-sized lawgivers include: Minos, Hammurabi, Moses, Akhnaton, Solon, Solomon, Julius Caesar, Justinian, Charlemagne, and Napoleon.

    Remarks: 
    Work on the "new" capitol (Nebraska's third), began in 1922 and was completed in 1934 at a cost of nearly ten million dollars. Goodhue was the architect; Lawrie the sculptor. IAS files contain related excerpt from "A Harmony of the Arts: the Nebraska State Capitol," edited by Frederick Luebke, 1990; and excerpts from American Architect, Oct. 1934.
