The sculptural ornamentation on the north elevation was commissioned and created as an integrated whole under the artistic supervision of Paul Wayland Bartlett. The works were commissioned by the State Commission on Sculpture primarily between 1906-1908 and dedicated July 30, 1908, with the exception of Brooks' statue of Wadsworth installed in 1916.
