    Description: 
    Full-length figure of a Union soldier at parade rest. He wears a uniform, overcoat and cap. The cape of his overcoat is thrown over his proper right shoulder. He holds the barrel of a rifle with both hands; the butt of the gun rests on the ground in front of him. A canteen and bayonet hang at his proper left hip. The granite sculpture stands atop a granite base. On the lower front face of the base is a bas-relief of crossed rifles. The base ends in a single step.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture, which cost approx. $1,200, was funded through community subscription. The sculpture was dedicated on Memorial Day, 1917. The firm of Adams & McNichol were contracted to place the monument on its foundation. IAS files contain copies of related articles from The Union (Manchester, NH), May 31, 1917 and Hanover (NH) Gazette, May 24 and June 7, 1917. IAS files contain copies of related excerpts from Dorothy W. Sears' "Lyme Common, Part II", Lyme Historians, 1978, pg. 30-37; and David Ruell's unpublished manuscript "The Public Sculpture of New Hampshire", Concord: New Hampshire Historical Society, 1980, pg. 104-105.
