    Description:
The monument consists of a bronze sculpture of a female figure standing atop a tall, square granite column flanked at its base by bronze figures of a World War I soldier and World War I sailor. The female figure, possibly representing Liberty, holds a flag in her proper left hand and a laurel wreath in her proper right hand. She has shoulder-length hair and wears a tiara with a five-pointed star. She is dressed in long robes that are belted at the waist. Below her on her proper left, the soldier carries a gun with a bayonet and marches with his proper left leg forward. Below her on her proper right, the sailor carries a gun with a bayonet and marches with his proper right leg forward. On the lower front of the column, there is a bronze eagle with wings spread, holding a quiver of arrows, laurel leaves, and an olive branch in its talons. The memorial is flanked by two commemorative tablets listing the names of those who serve in the Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.

    Remarks:
The $25,000 cost of the monument was donated by C. Kavanaugh. Originally, the monument was to have been installed in Flat Iron Park, but it was feared that a natural spring at that site would damage the piece. For additional information see Sidney Hammersley's "The History of Waterford," 1957.
