    (Front pedestal:) A TRIBUTE TO THE BOYS/WHO SERVED IN THE/CIVIL WAR/1861-1865
    Description: 
    "A Civil War soldier holding a musket and standing on a pedestal. The soldier's face is slightly turned to the northeast and he stands at ease clutching the barrel of the musket. The soldier wears a cap and a three-quarters length coat with cape. The proper right side of the cape is slung over the proper right shoulder allowing the proper right arm to freely grasp the top of the musket. The proper left hand is below the proper right hand on the musket barrel. The soldier's proper left leg is placed forward and is slightly bent at the knee. The coat is parted revealing his full leg. He wears square-toed boots and has a cartridge pack on his belt. A sword hangs from the proper left side of his belt and on the proper right side is a waist pack."

    Remarks: 
    In 1919, act no. 248 of the General Assembly of the State of Vermont (see IAS files for copy) appropriated $250 to match town funds to assist the the Women's Relief Corps, the auxiliary to the G.A.R. of Royalton, to erect the monument. On July 24, 1919, the local newspaper Herald & News reported that Thomas Adams & J. E. McNichol of Adams & McNichol (a monument firm from White River Junction) were in town for business. IAS files contain copies of the Royalton Town Records surrounding the events leading to the erection of the monument and a copy of the poem read at the dedication ceremony.
