AFTER/WORLD WAR I, REALIZING AMERICA'S AIR POWER/DEFICIENCIES, HE BECAME INCREASINGLY CRITICAL/OF THE NATIONAL MILITARY POSTURE. IT WAS/DURING THIS PERIOD/THAT HE POINTED OUT/THE VULNERABILITY OF HAWAII FOR A SNEAK/ATTACK. ON AUGUST 8, 1946, CONGRESS/AUTHORIZED THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES TO/AWARD HIM POSTHUMOUSLY A MEDAL OF/HONOR IN RECOGNITION OF HIS OUTSTANDING/PIONEER SERVICE AND FORESIGHT IN THE FIELD/OF AMERICAN MILITARY AVIATION.     A life-size bronze bust of General Mitchell in World War I Army Aviation Corps Service Dress with no hat. His head is turned slightly to the proper left. The bust rests on a simple polished granite base.

    The bust was donated by the sculptor, Lt. Col. Jerry McKenna, USAF (retired); the base was donated by USAA. General Mitchell envisioned a strong, separate Air Force and was the first to propose an Air Force Academy.
