FROM/THIS GROUP CAME ARIZONA'S FIRST SCHOOLTEACHERS/AND THE PUBLISHER OF THE FIRST NEWSPAPER./IN 1876 A GROUP OF PIONEER WOMEN AND THEIR/FAMILIES CAME FROM THE NORTH, FERRIED THEIR/COVERED WAGONS ACROSS THE COLORADO RIVER. WITH/INDOMITABLE BRAVERY AND STRENGTH THEY HELPED/MAKE THE DESERT BLOSSOM INTO A GREEN OASIS./THEIR DESCENDANTS PIONEERED IN MANY SETTLEMENTS THROUGHOUT ARIZONA.     Description: 
    Full-length female figure in high relief. She wears pioneer dress with sunhat and long skirts. In her proper right arm she holds an infant; the infant's head rests on her proper right shoulder. The copper relief is mounted on a round cast stone background whose shape resembles the front of a covered wagon.

    The sculpture was commissioned by the Squaw Peak Camp of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers.
