The Alabama state flag surrounded by the four Confederate flags that flew over the State during the Civil War. At lower left, the first flag adopted by the Confederacy in 1861, known as the "Stars and Bars," was designed by Nicola Marschall; above this is "The Stainless Banner" (1863); and to the right is "The Blood-stained Banner" (1865); and below this the Battle Flag of General Robert E. Lee's army of Northern Virginia; and in the center is the state flag of Alabama (1895).
