Description:
Granite monument with several sculptural elements. The monument is topped with the
figure
of an eagle. The eagle's wings are half-spread and pulled back; its head is turned to the proper right. The eagle stands on a column, the top of which is draped with an American flag. On the front face of the column, below the flag, are several insignia in bas-relief. Near the base of the column, two pedestals project out from the either side, upon which stand full-length figures of a soldier and a sailor. The sailor stands on the proper right side of the column with his back to the column. He wears a uniform. In his proper right hand he holds a pair of binoculars to his eyes. He stands beside an object which is wrapped with heavy, coiled rope. He leans on this object with his proper left hand. The soldier stands on the proper left side of the column facing the front. He wears a Civil War uniform including cap and caped overcoat. He holds a rifle with both hands; the butt of the gun rests on the ground in front of his feet. The column ends in a multi-stepped base. The bottom step of the base has outer faces which are rough-hewn. A low metal fence embedded in the top perimeter of the bottom step encircles the monument.
