    (Front center sculpture:) In Loving/Memory (Front bottom sculpture:) William Hickman/Harte - V-S-N - killed/in action - June XVI/MDCCCLXII AGED XXXVI/YEARS - AND MARY - A -/HARTE - HIS WIFE/DIED SEPTEMBER IX/MCMVII - AGED LXXI YEARS (Directly above front inscription is a circluar mark of an "I" inside a "C")
    Description: 
    An ornate celtic cross cenotaph, with "a variety of nautical and religious symbols." On one side, a nude female is in the center, with a hand at the top of the cross, an eye on one side, and lips on the other. The other side of the cross has an angel blowing a horn in the center, three candles in a holder at the top, a chalice to one side, candles, and some other form above the sides. There is a decorative circle where the arms of the cross meet. The facade with the nude on it has writing near the bottom while the opposite side has a ship. The cross is put together in three sections which all have pins carved into the original stone.

    Remarks: 
    IAS files contain map of cemetery showing present and former locations; formerly located further back in the cemetery, but was moved at some point closer the entrance. IAS files also have a copy of a letter from Alexander Calder (son of artist) which provides approximate execution date. There is also a letter from the Rock Island Public Library files which mentions that the real name of Mr. Harte is William Henry Harte and which describes the Mr. Harte's life.
